Introduction:
Crown & Applause is a rhythm game about power, performance, and what happens when a kingdom begins to pay too much attention to its idiot.
You take on the role of a wandering mouse jester sent by a king who wants his subjects to laugh rather than think. Travelling the kingdom, reading the crowd, and putting on a show is the easy part of the job. However, basic entertainment turns into something much more intricate as the jester ascends from muddy village squares to the marble halls of the royal court.
The Rhythm:
Most rhythm games challenge you to follow a single line. Crown & Applause makes you manage two at once. Notes approach from both sides of the stage, moving toward the center as pressure builds from above and below. It’s a simple mechanic that reflects the jester’s precarious position, but quickly becomes much more demanding.
Every stage features its own bardcore soundtrack, unique audience, atmosphere, and threshold for failure. Perform well, and the crowd cheers you on. Miss the rhythm, and their mood shifts—they begin to boo, grow impatient, and eventually start throwing tomatoes.
The audience isn’t just part of the scenery. It actively reacts to your performance, creating a dynamic source of pressure throughout each stage. Early village crowds are relatively forgiving, but once you reach the royal court, even a small mistake can turn the audience against you.
Between Performance:
After each stage, the pace settles down and gives you time to prepare for what comes next. The coins you earn from performances can be spent in the shop on upgrades connected to your alignment, whether your loyalty lies with the king, the audience, or yourself. Choosing one path over another subtly changes how you play, with those decisions gradually shaping your experience and the jester’s identity.
You can also encounter narrative dialogue scenes that expand the world beyond the stage. Get to know the characters the jester meets, uncover the conflicts hidden beneath the spectacle, and experience moments that never become part of the show but are just as important to the story.
These scenes are optional, so you can skip them and still reach the end of the game. However, the choices you make during them influence the alignment system—and exploring those conversations may reveal additional endings when the final curtain falls.
Features:
