The only surviving human being, discovered centuries later, has no memory, no past, and a lively artificial intelligence (AI) in his mind that is unaware of the distinction between people and computers.

Sparse, primitive tribes who cling to scavenged remains of treasured technology make up this post-apocalyptic future. The deadly Blackzones—large tracts of deserted, fertile territory that are inhabited by menacing machine-creatures known as “Demons”—make their lives dangerous. The only people who can successfully cross the Blackzones and steal valuable Salvage for the sake of their clan’s wealth are the elusive Blackrunners, a sect of skilled survivalists.

The final human must train to become the newest Blackrunner with the erratic, husky Loken, learning about the Blackzones, the unfathomable beasts that prowl them, and the controversial issue of his own origins.
